It has come up in conversation several times lately, so I am posting a pointer:
CHDK software and scripts add a superset of functions to most Canon point and shoot cameras, giving them extra programmability and new features. You want to send up a camera on a kite or quadcopter and have it take pictures every N seconds? You want to do time lapse photography? How about motion sensing for security or trail cameras? From day one of my (and everyone else's) involvement with this group, there has been the looming question of "When do we get a hackerspace together?" I have tools and parts to share and more project storage space than workspace at my house. A space to have workshops, meetings, and collaborate would be awesome. I only bring this up because it has happened in Olympia in association with Artswalk in April 2011 (and 2009) and may happen again. It does not involve microcontrollers or software...more like beer and duct tape. Still...it looked awesome fun when I saw races in Georgetown and at a Maker Faire. I doubt it is legal to run your racer off a Variac to get 130V, but there is probably room for some electronic cleverness. (read more) about Power Tool Drag Racing
I admit to being underwhelmed at first (as with the pogo plug, beagle board, etc.) but now that beta testers have XBMC and AirPlay support running I am starting to think that it will have a place in my living room...and maybe my workbench and car.
