OMEGA-MIME redux part one - ARTSWALK April possibilities

Mon, 02/20/2012 - 10:04pm -- drjohn

The Most Important Meeting Evar (tm) was a big success:  everyone met everyone, pizza was had, and miraculously all the topics got covered.  I counted 17ish total folks, several new to me.

I could not do the night justice in a big omnibus post, but I did want to post on the consensus for ArtsWalk in April.  Bit of background: There are tons of different organizations working together to make Artswalk an Olympia "thing".  There is a second Artswalk in October which is a little smaller (no procession, for one thing).  I thought OMEGA could take on several roles at Artswalk, each with a different organization, notably:

1) Exhibit art during Artswalk at our space or another (Olygeek?). We'd pay a small amount to ArtsWalk org to get on the map, get foot traffic and massively raise awareness of the group.

2) Apply to be a vendor at Artswalk (Make: Olympia curates the vendors, so a booth is not a sure thing)

3) Hold workshops prior to the event for luminaria lighting (luminaria making is org'd by Procession of the Species folks)

4) Build Power Tool Drag Racers (MIYoly)

We quickly realized #4 was what we wanted to put our time on this April.  Our own KBill is organizing this again this year, and gave a brief intro/history of the sport and construction.  Notable notes:  It's not all about speed: style and creativity count.  Rules were made to be broken.  Circular saws don't go the way most people think; consider a direction of travel arrow on your racer.

Looking forward to workshops and/or demos soonish.  In the meantime, don't throw away power tools or anything with wheels.
